BUILDING BRANDS THAT MATTER IN THE AGE AI

With AI, we can now create logos, websites, sound, films, visuals, and countless other forms of creative work. If you understand digital technology and are fluent in digital tools, you can produce almost anything today with the right prompts.

At the most basic level, simply write a good prompt in ChatGPT and watch the result appear within seconds.

But does this mean that creating the right and meaningful content has become easier too?

Not quite.

AI may be able to offer you an infinite number of alternatives. But knowing which alternative is right for your brand is another craft altogether. Above all, it requires judgment and discernment.

So what about the questions we really need to be asking?
- What are we going to say as a brand?
- Why will people choose us?
- What meaning or purpose does the brand represent?
- How will we differentiate ourselves over the next five years?

Or, at a more existential level:

- Why do we exist as a brand?
- What do we stand for? What do we stand against?
- What kind of cultural, technological and competitive landscape are we operating in?
- What are our customers’ needs, wants, desires and expectations?
- How do we enrich their lives and their own stories?
- What change are we creating in people’s lives?
- What do our employees believe in?
- What are our cultural codes and values?

You may have experienced this yourself. When you ask AI a strategic question, you may have noticed how quickly its answer changes depending on how you respond. Say, “That’s what you’re saying, but what about this?” and you’ll see AI instantly pivot and come back with a whole new set of suggestions.

But in strategic decision-making, some of the most important capabilities are judgment, intuition, and the ability to make decisions. And these are among the most valuable qualities that come with being human.

In the same way, isn’t understanding a brand almost as if it were a human being—its culture, intuition, character, beliefs, courage, and what makes it connect with people—an inherently human skill?

This is why the role of brand strategy has never been more important.
